Cologne Cathedral
Cologne and the Rhine.
Day 4: Cologne and the Romantic Rhine - Friday, August 11, 2023
Today we head to Bacharach, but we make a stop along the way to visit the Cologne Cathedral. Thomas was our local guide for the tour of the Cologne Cathedral. As usual, Rick has the best guides and local guides. Thomas was excellent. The Gothic Cologne Cathedral is the main attraction in Cologne. The Cathedral is huge. Its ceiling is 140 feet tall. It was started in 1248 and after being stalled in the Middle Ages, was finally finished in 1880. The Gero-Crucifix was carved in the 970s showing Jesus with his eyes closed. It is the oldest surviving monumental crucifix north of the Alps. The first glimpse of the cathedral is amazing, it is so huge. And the interior is so beautiful and big that it is hard to take it all in. |
After our tour of the Cologne Cathedral was over, we headed to the city of Bacharach. We had dinner at our hotel and then we had a little time to explore in the evening. I walked up the hill behind Bacharach to take in the nighttime view of Werner Chapel. It is the main landmark of Bacharach. It was commenced in 1289 and spanned a period of 140 years. It was Destroyed in the War of the Grand Alliance in 1689.
The evening light on the Werner Chapel and the town of Bacharach below was very beautiful and enchanting. |
