The Processional Way
Extra Day in Berlin.
Day 13: Berlin's Extra Day - Saturday, August 20, 2023
But wait, our trip is not over yet. We decided to stay an extra day to visit a couple of museums that we did not have time for on the tour. The first museum we visited was the Neues (New) Museum. This is a beautiful museum, featuring objects from the prehistoric world. We focused on the Egyptian Collection, with the stunning bust of Queen Nefertiti. She was stunning. You could not take a picture of Queen Nefertiti in her enclosed room, but you could take one from the adjoining room as we did. Another item in this museum that for us was a must see was the tall, cone head like Golden Hat, made of paper-thin gold leaf. It was likely worn by the priest of a sun cult popular among the Celtic people of central Europe around 1,000 BC. The hat is 30 inches tall and was hammered from a pound of gold into a single sheet of gold leaf less than a millimeter thick. |
The Pergamon Museum is a world-class museum containing Berlin's Collection of Classical Antiquities. The gigantic Pergamon Alter is under renovation and we could not see it. However we were able to see the massive Babylonian Processional Way and Ishtar Gate with glazed blue tiles, from the sixth century BC. It was massive and beautiful. It is hard to imagine this being built in the sixth century BC.

Remember that I had visited Hamburg for training while I worked for Brown Printing Company in Minnesota. It was owned by a German company in Hamburg called Gruner + Jahr. I visited a couple of times for training and had to take another look. Well I also had visited Berlin for some training at the Bertelsmann building just off Museum Island on the Spree River. Of course I had to visit it again.
