Dachau & Historic Bavaria.
Day 7: Dachau & Historic Bavaria - Monday, August 14, 2023
Today we made a visit to Dachau, the infamous Concentration Camp Memorial. We learned the lessons of the Holocaust and World War II. Dachau was one of the first concentration camps built by Nazi Germany and the longest running one, opening on 22 March 1933. I was surprised that the Dachau camp system grew to include nearly 100 sub-camps, which were mostly work camps, and were located throughout southern Germany and Austria. The main camp was liberated by U.S. forces on 29 April 1945. It was a very sobering experience. |

We left Dachau with a powerful reminder of the past and now headed to Munich for a tour of the city. Munich is said to be one Germany's most livable cities. After the tour, I can see why that is said. It has a beautiful Old Town with lots of space to enjoy yourself. It was a joy walking around Munich and mingling with the locals.

Day 8: Free Day in Munich - Tuesday, August 15, 2023
As Rick says, today is a vacation day away from your vacation. The day was ours to do as we wished. We made the most of it in spite of some rainy weather. We visited the English Garden and watched the locals riding the Eisbach with their surfboards. At dinner we had a great conversation with some locals. It was a very fun evening. |
