Day 5: Rhine Castles and River Cruise - Saturday, August 12, 2023
Today we headed to St. Goar to visit Rheinfels Castle. It is a castle ruin located above the left (west) bank of the Rhine in St. Goar, Germany. It was started in 1245 and after expansions, it was the largest fortress in the Middle Rhine Valley between Koblenz and Mainz. It is the largest castle overlooking the Rhine, and historically covered five times its current area. While much of the castle is a ruin, some of the outer buildings are now a luxury hotel, wellness center, and restaurant. There is also a museum within some of the better preserved structures. It was amazing to see the ruins and hear about the history of the castle with the very knowledgeable local Guide David. |

We disembarked the cruise in Bacharach and had a town tour with our local guide Birgit who showed us around Bacharach. It is a very small city but very beautiful.
We finished our walking tour of Bacharach and headed straight to Bastian's Weingut sum Gruner Baum to taste some wines from the region. The wines from the region were white wines and very good. It was a delightful afternoon to be enjoying wine outside on a patio in beautiful surroundings and good tour friends.
We had some time to explore more of Bacharach after the wine tasting so we climbed up into the vineyard town for an overview of the town of Bacharach. I thought it was one of the most breathtaking sights of the Germany tour.
